Abstract

The development of social media has created a new space for users to produce, disseminate, and debate meanings surrounding gender through various forms of digital communication. One interesting phenomenon is the #WomanInMaleFields trend, which employs humor, satire, and gender role reversals to highlight behaviors and standards perceived as double standards when applied to men and women. This study aims to analyze how gender discourse and power relations are constructed through the #WomanInMaleFields trend on the X platform. This research adopts a qualitative approach utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method, which encompasses text, discursive practice, and social practice dimensions, alongside Michel Foucault's concepts of power relations and knowledge as a supporting framework. The research data consists of posts and user interactions on X featuring the hashtag #WomanInMaleFields, selected through purposive sampling based on their relevance to gender standard reversals. The findings reveal that the use of satire and gender role reversals serves to question expectations placed on men in relationships, particularly regarding physical appearance, financial provision, domestic work, and obedience to a partner. At the same time, user responses demonstrate a negotiation of meaning, ranging from acceptance of the humor to criticism and rejection. Consequently, #WomanInMaleFields operates not merely as an entertainment trend, but also as a discursive space where gender norms are sustained, challenged, and negotiated through digital communication.
